I am looking at a 996 (sold my 964 C4) with a "new" engine. The car is MY99 and the engine was exchanged in 2001 by an authorized dealer with all papers well kept. What is your perception of failures on swapped engines? I do not want to stir up all the emotions on this topic, just find some comments from owners with experience after an engine exchange. I have gone through alot of searches, and I have Adrians Book on 996. So the question is basically - What are the improvements done in a new engine from 2001 compared to 98-99? Thanks

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Factory rebuilt, done by a dealer, with complete documentation? Go for it. I'd say treat it like a new car.
It hasn't happened to me, but this forum and other Porsche mags suggest that a reman. engine is a plus to have , not a negative. So knowing what I do now, I think I'd seek out a 996 with a 'new' engine. GL
I was having the same conversation with my dealer today... he said he did see an RMS failure on a re-man... he also said they are quite rare for re-man motors... but that just tells me that this re-man didn't have the IMS update on it!!! not acceptable Porsche...

What does a leaky RMS have to do with the IMS update?

nothing... my typo... I meant to say IMS failure... not RMS.... ...the reman had an IMS failure...
