Quick question: What should the idle RPM's show/be: 1) When starting the vehicle 2) After a couple of minutes (not moving) 3) After the engine is warm (i.e. 80dgcC) I could imagine this also depends on the surrounding temp (and maybe also as well as the current humidity)... Just had the car back from a major service a month or so back and was told everything was in tip top condition (Official Porsche Garage)...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Whatever the starting idle it should settle about 800rpm standing.
You mean 800 RPM here is a ODBII gauge image of mine idling after a oil change On cold starts my 996 idles at 1,000-1,200 RPM and stays there for 2-3 min It idles smoothly then settles down to 800
Hurdi you may be the first person to frag his engine from over rev while at idle. I would at least get it below red line. Just kidding.
I think Hurdi's situation could be interpreted as Type 3 over rev.
@Seeeu911 OK, that's about what mine does as well (maybe a tad less around the 700 mark) and each time I have mentioned it when having the car for service, none seemed to lift an eyebrow... I just seem to remember it being higher, but I'm probably just imagining things.

Actually, I know someone who beat him to it I was talking to a guy the other day about an engine problem he was having with his Ford 500. We had talked in the past about it and I gave him my thoughts on what might be going on -- he was dealing with misfires -- and hadn't heard back in a while. The other day he brought me up to date. The car is in the shop getting new valves. Seems some valves were damaged from an over rev incident. What he says happened is he over revved the engine while stationary and found out that the rev limiter doesn't kick in in time to save the engine and some valves floated and were kissed by the pistons. No I do not know why he over revved the engine while the car was stationary and I didn't ask.

You tell us what your car's engine is doing. The answers to your questions can vary depending upon MY and ambient temperature. For instance with my Boxster I seem to recall when started in real cold temperatures the initial idle speed is higher than when started at a milder temperature, but I have no real numbers. Pretty much when I start the engine as long as it behaves ok and about the same as has before I really pay no attention to the readings of the tach. Whatever the initial idle speed it does drop and the engine does smooth out as the engine gains heat. How long it takes for the engine speed to drop near its hot idle depends upon how cold the engine was when it was started. IIRC hot engine idle speed is 740 +/- 40 RPMs. Keep in mind the tach is not that accurate. The one in each of my cars reads a bit optimistic based on the numbers I can obtain from querying the DME via the OBD2 port with an OBD2 code reader/data viewer/logger.
@Macster , thanks for your reply. This was actually what I was "looking" for. As you say, depending on the temperature outside etc, the RPM's vary and could be anything from 1'100 to 750 on my MY03. After a little while when the engine get's a tad warmer the idle RPM tends to fall but doesn't feel as smooth as at the higher RPM's... Again, I talked to Porsche about this and they did not really react to it and nothing was mentioned when I had the car in for a full service and general checkup (which I do once a year, well it's been done twice since Jan 2013 when I got the car home).
