Before I go dismantling and spelunking, who knows what is under the covers on each side of the cowl area (obscured access by wiper arm mechanicals). I�m hopeful that is access to clean out some hvac ducting� MY�99 996 Drivers side shown here:

That's the fresh air inlet for a RHD car. The HVAC components are mirrored on those. The pollen filter would be above it.
On a lhd car all u will find under that is the top of the fuse panel. As said above look under the other side plastic and u will see the filter and top of the hvac unit. U wont be able to do much from there and if u hit the black foam on the vent doors it will disinagrate.
