Does keeping the oil level high help lube the IMS? Does the oil level get that high under normal idle and driving conditions? I also have a theory about the outer race failing on the IMS, is it due to idling and low rpm-ing the car? My theory is that the unloading bearing bangs around unloading and loading smacking the outer race. I'm am totally just guessing from what I have read about the failures.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The OEM bearing is sealed, the seal acts as a shield to keep oil away from the internals of the bearing, so oil level doesn't alter things much. Be more concerned with the acid levels in the oil and how they kill the seal and start stage 1 bearing failure.
You need to discuss this in the dedicated IMS thread sticky towards the top of this forum.
Or, you could continue with IMSB thread #1,000,000 just for fun. On a serious note, you better pay attention to whatever Jake posts about IMSB's and oil.
Flat 6, is it also fair to presume that a thinner oil like the 0w40 might get in behind the seal of the IMS and "flush" out the grease. That that might be a clue, I can be obliged to think that a high oil level with the combination of thin oil and just for fun add som acidity to the mix. The IMS grease can become diluted or get dissolved in the oil.
And, it begins. Please continue!
All of this is in the searches and also on the "IMS 101" pages shared on all our sites concerning IMSB failures. There's no one particular thing that leads to IMSB failure, but there is one way to avoid it. An elective retrofit.
