I have seen more topics on cracked heads than IMS failiure on the 3.4L models. According to this forum, people say that 1% of IMS failiure occures on 99-00 models but what about cracked heads? Does it occur very early in the engine's life? or at higher mileage?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The overheated no warning cracked head on my 3.4 C2 1999 was at 117k miles.
I would suggest you ask Marc or John to pin a "Cracked Head Poll" just below the "IMS Failure" poll.
a 2000 model 996 has a greater chance of a cracked head than any of the other 26 modes of failure. Symptomless is the norm..
Is this a trick question? We all know cracked heads are based on how you spin the wheel and which casting wasn't properly QA'd at the factory and or how proactive you were in replacing that waterpump or thermostat.
Jake: Was the 99 a different design then the 00 or were the motors just better QC'd when built? I have an oct 98 build.
It seems like 99/00 models, cracked head more common. 01+ IMS more common
