Placing an aero kit on my cab. New nose, tail, rear bumper, and rockers. I plan on keeping all parts to return to original if wanted. Current paint about 7/10. Some chips, clear coat needs refreshed. Local shops want to do a full respray as opposed to trying to match. So, thoughts and if you've had similar work, reasonable price? I'm outside OKC.

I don't know about OKC (Oklahoma City?) but in NY (Long Island) I think you'd be looking between $5 -10k for a "factory" type job.
Geez, I always heard NY was expensive! Shop in town here, good work, had an Acura done by them, quoted 8-10K for "base" paint work. Maybe more depending on prep!! Yikes!! Awfully expensive paint for a car not carrying a great deal of value (outside of sentimental!).
Yeah, I don't know what you mean by "base" - that's a pretty general term. If someone told me that, I'd ask for more specifics. I'm sure you could spend more, but I think 10k will get you an excellent job. Obviously, material costs vary quite a bit depending on the type/color of paint being used. Of course prep is of the utmost importance, but it's usually done by low level guys who don't get paid a lot... 5k is probably optimistic, but I'd think if you do some hard shopping you could find someone that's really good and hungry for work. The 911/996 is a pretty small car with very flowing lines (not a lot of hard lines/nooks /crannys = easier to prep&paint) I think the shop sees Porsche = $$$$...Any auto body guys here? What say you?
I think you're looking at a Porsche tax at that price...
No matter were you live, good work just costs more, when it comes to paint thats really true, the labor and prep takes time and the longer that takes the more money it will be,thats just how it is.there are some shops that turn cars over very fast, those places are generally interested in volumes of work and not so much in doing it the right way, witch involves generally more labor and prep that amounts to time etc.here in the new york and long island areas ive gone to places with my car,and they wont get involved with exotics and or porsche cars, they no us owners are generally into are cars in a special way and its not worth it to them if they do some mediocre job( witch is there specialty) and youre not satisfied ,it becomes a pain in the butt as they dont want to get married to any job.go to a shop look around see the type of cars they are working on,keep in mind alot of people dont care about their cars even if they are expensive vehicles,(leased etc) but at least the body shop is attracting that kind of customer, when it comes to certain materials that require painting its even more important that the prep is correct,i.e polyurethane and some plastics witch OEM aerokit parts are made from, those parts require heating prior to painting for proper adhesion etc.etc i could go on and on ,bottom line you generally get what you pay for in the body shop/paint world,so ask around talk to other porsche maniacs! somebody should no the guy who charges more but does it right the first time,as far as cost and what people on rennlist think is either cheap or expensive is relative to where they live more or less, for instance i live in new york city witch as you know is generally more expensive than for instance oklahoma, doesnt mean you cant get the same quality work done, just less choices,so take your time, and im sure you will find some....good luck!
Crazy expensive.... Better off selling the car and buying another with the aero kit

Most certainly! But like most other guys here, I have an unhealthy attachment to my Inge! (or The Mistress, as my wife calls her) Remember the St. Pauli Girl beer label??? "You never forget your first". Well, she's my first! I'll never sell! I'd probably sell one of my kids first (now, there's a thought--teenagers!!) I have been blessed and I've got the money. Just looking for a realistic price range and not paying the "Porsche tax". I'm checking out some shops this weekend.

So Randy - spoken like a true auto-body guy ! Lots of reasoning but short on specifics... How about quoting some real L.I. prep/paint prices (ball park is ok) 10k still seems on the high end to me (excluding some type of crazy custom color job)
well i cant quite quote any prices, not knowing what kind of work is involved,i can tell you two places on long island that ive used, that are known for there work,in the local porsche community,IMO the best my area has to offer. FINNISH LINE COLLISION,VALLEY STREAM and MARTINO AUTO CONCEPTS,GLEN COVE.again not cheap, but lots of experience with Porsche.
Easy $5k-$10k with the car being properly disassembled so you don't get hard masking lines and over spray. Its all about the labor.
Simply put paint is one of the greatest examples of you get what you pay for. That's why you see shops in this business ranging from paint costs from 1000-10000. It all comes down to what you are comfortable and able to pay. I would recommend first giving it a good detail and seeing how much of the original FACTORY paint you can bring back to life. You might be surprised and get lucky with getting away with just color-matching the aero kit.
Maaco has some good deals on painting.

As a bonus, leave the windows down and get an interior refresh!!
I don't know about these guys but my car is worth about $17,000 and the paint was hopeless plus little dings and decent scratches here and there. I got a $2500 paint job here in Dallas. I have an imperfection here and there so "get what you pay for" in my case is a car that looks ten times better than before. It would take an enthusiast to tell the difference and I don't know any of those beyond this forum. Sure, maybe it won't last as long, maybe it will. If the next owner (if I ever let it go) wants to put a $10k paint job on then I welcome them to do so. I'll end this post like every "you get what you pay for" post. --ROI
