Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The good news is that my car is back after ten days in the shop...ten days driving a rental Ford Focus...ten days having dark fantasies about having to go to court to get justice...imaging every awful think the could imagine. I kept telling myself it is just a car. But the truth is, that it is more than just a car. I never felt this way about my Audi A4s or VWs or many of the other cars. Even the 308 was given to the valets without a second thought. But the Porsches have all had a different feel...something special about the sound of the engine and the view from the driver's seat. From the moment it got hit in the rear on Monday the 19th until I picked it up today I realized the rhythm of my life had been interrupted. I guess if I was smarter I'd be richer and maybe I'd have so many cars that it wouldn't have mattered. But I'm not and it did matter. And now at last it is over. Driving home in a late afternoon rain I felt happy, calm, I was smiling, listening to KKJZ...Charlie Parker. The sax and the flat six go well together.

I bought my car in Sherman oaks. While they were taking care of a few thing,s they gave me a loaner 1990 Acura legend . Not even a nice one either. Didn't even have a working radio. Made my appreciate my Pcar more when I got it!

POST 3Original post

Ha, I've been having to mostly drive around a Kia Soul since October when my motor blew, until two days ago when I got my car back. Talk about a disrupted rhythm of life! Glad your car's back!!!

POST 4Original post

You all just need to get a spare one And I know you have a couple Cuda, so there is no excuse even if they are 914s My Cayenne was in the body shop for 3 months so the 996 was my DD that winter. No one seemed to understand my suffering... Actually the 958 is my love so it was a joy to get it back and get away from the 911 (its hers. I like my SUV). Glad you got it back and all is well again.

Charlie Parker FTW ! The flat 6 is mechanical heroin indeed ...

POST 6Original post

similar feelings are leaving beemers and especially Mcars

POST 7Original post

All I did was float the idea of a second one and I was (almost) banned from reading Rennlist. R

All you have to is put her in a Cayenne.

POST 9Original post

Nice to hear you are driving your Pcar again John. Life is good and balanced once again.

Just be careful not to drive to an art auction and park in the sun right after your car has been to the body shop. I think I read in a thread somewhere that will screw up your radio.

Maybe a 986? My wife still grumbles that I sold it.

I thought that was the leading cause of cup holder failures?

POST 13Original post

Amen. And, Amen. If there's one thing I've learned in 25 years of intermittent 911 ownership: Porsches will get you through times of no *anything*, better than anything will get you through times of no Porsches.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If life works out well at some point in time people will point at me and mention "that old guy in that old car." Growing up in Los Angeles, owning a car was a rite of passage. There were baseball cards but of automobiles in the early fifties...the hot rods and sports cars were my favorite. I pinned them on the wall above my desk, put on a football helmet and swim goggles, and imagined I was racing them in the Mille Miglia. My first car was a used 1953 Mercury Monterey two door hardtop. Last of the flathead V8s but with an automatic transmission. Girls loved it but I wanted something with more edge...more thunder. The first time I tried to impress a girl I put the transmission in nuetural, reved the engine until I thought it would explode, and then slammed the transmission into low gear. The drive shaft separated from the car and went rolling into the gas station across the street. That was my first breakdown, the first time I was suddenly without "my" car. And that is where the separation anxiety began. A rental car will always get me from point A to B. And I've owned a few cars that excited no more passion in me than a rental car. But there have been others, like my 996, that reawaken the boy dreamer in me. Suddenly the world isn't about point A to B...instead the simplest journey becomes an adventure. Take that away from me, even for just a few days, and the kid wearing his football helmet and swim goggles gets very unhappy.

"the kid wearing his football helmet and swim goggles gets very unhappy." Ok we get it John, you were a geek growing up What's up with this need to constantly open yourself to ridicule and derision ? Jeez...go start another IMSB thread why don't ya!!!

POST 16Original post

I dunno, I enjoy reading John's posts. Intelligent guy with a sense of humour and some graceful humility. I too, am tired of I*S threads, no matter who started 'em!

John, Hurdi, KK, Kalashnikov (hell even Schnell got some bad tequila last night it appears). Jake & Martin in a cat fight. They may have you pulling your hair out, but no argument they make life interesting around here. There is nothing worse than a boring week of Rennlist. (Figuratively speaking of course)

POST 19Original post

not so much seperation anxiety, but 'seeing it parked in the garage' anxiety...these cars do tug at your emotions there was a period from early December to early January where it was on life support ie; battery tender a seemingly mild winter has afforded me some hundred mile Saturdays including this last one, drove right up until the road was snow covered

Somedays Rennlist can be like hemroids...all you can do is grab your knees and scream.

POST 22Original post

I'm going on 5 weeks without mine, and facing a much much longer period ahead. It's been brutal! The folks at my local dealer are getting used to seeing me on the lot the past 2 weeks...

POST 23Original post

Mine was put away Nov. 1st, coming back out April 1st! I can't take it.....I gotta go shovel me some snow to put my mind off it for a while...counting down the days!

LOL - I'll take your word for that R

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a nice relaxing half hour washing the 996 yesterday. Having it back home has made the last four days so much nicer. For those with cars in the shop, the pleasure when you again get behind the wheel will make all the memories of waiting disappear. I was looking at a 356 A coupe replica by JPS Motorsports...now that would be a great alternate on days you didn't want to or couldn't drive your 996. The primitive fun of a vintage 356 but with none of the fears and anxiety about its value or replacability. At the same time, looking at the old Porsches and then jumping in my modern one, made me feel that the 996 is going to age very nicely. And if it remains the "bargain" among the 911 line, all the better for the enthusiasts with more passion than dollars.

I hope my post didn't come off as being nasty - I enjoy John's posts too (sometimes in a sadistic sort of way...) - It was meant more as a friendly jab!!!
