Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The alarm on my car is a contining source of annoyance. Mainly because it sets itself automatically when the car is unlocked, whether or not there is someone sitting in it. So I'm hoping the local Porsche dealer can reprogram this. But I'm also wondering if some other strange things the alarm(s) does/do might indicate I also have some aftermarket alarm. First, when there alarm goes off, in addition to beeping, there is a siren sound. I understand the stock alarm only beeps. (Correct?) Of course, it could just be an optional or aftermarket siren hooked up to the standard alarm. However, when I push the key button to stop the noise, the beeping stops instantly, but the siren continues for something like 5 seconds, making me wonder if the key isn't linked to two different alarms. Second, if I lock the door by turning the key (which is said to save battery life), and if when I later unlock the door, I also do it by turning the key, the alarm goes off instantly. Normal? I hope not. Is this how the stock alarm shoud behave? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

POST 2Original post

Sounds like there is nothing normal about your alarm. The alarm should be silent when armed and disarmed unless a monitored item is open (glove box for example). Your owner's manual has a good overview of how the entire system should function, including differences in the various models of 996 (targa, coupe, etc...). Would help us if you would specify the exact year/model.

Good point. It's a 2002 Targa. I read somewhere (this forum?) that Targa and convertible alarms may have a self-alarming function when the car is left unlocked. I read the alarm section of the owner's manual a couple weeks ago, and didn't feel it told me everything I needed to know at the time.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
