POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Don't know if you guys have seen this but an intriguing short track test. The results don't prove anything other than on this particular day and this particular track this is the outcome . I did find the comments of the driver interesting. Porsche 930 Turbo vs 911 SC vs Boxster vs 996 Mashup Drag Race & Review - Project Porsche Ep. 5 - YouTube

POST 2Original post

I watched this whole series a couple nights ago... pretty interesting stuff honestly. They LOVE their boxsters! Honestly I'm starting to see why.

POST 3Original post

Great fun video. Gotta agree with them about the 986 - it is an extremely well balanced and fun car. But you'll never pry my hands off of my 996

POST 4Original post

Excellent comparison tests, AND our much criticized 996s came out on top! Nuf said. relinuca

POST 5Original post

No surprise on the outcome there. The fact is there have been so many advancements in the last 20 years that supercars from the previous eras can now be beat by minivans and family sedans. Not that this should take away from the experience of driving one but the reality of it is that they are relatively slow by today's standards. This also applies to the 996 which again can get bested by a minivan in a stoplight-to-stoplight race.

POST 6Original post

Just out of curiosity, what minivan is faster in a straight line than a 996?

This one: 1029hp Odyssey Minivan Burnout - YouTube Yeah I was exaggerating a bit to make a point but really what I was getting at is how performance of past supercars is now matched by ordinary vehicles.

POST 8Original post

I saw that clip. That Mk1 was nearly 2.75 seconds faster around that short track than the almighty 930 Turbo!! Not too shabby considering you could buy 4 or 5 996's for the cost of a 930.

POST 9Original post

Interesting video. After owning a '79 SC back in the 90s and a 996 for the last 9 years+, I'd prefer the look of my old SC to my current Porsche, but would be unwilling to trade the refinement and daily usability of the 996.

POST 10Original post

So, in a nutshell, the 1999 car beat the 1997 car which beat the 1986 car which beat the 1981 car. Hmm, sensing a pattern here but I just can't put my finger on it . . .

POST 11Original post

Here is a link from Car and Driver on horsepower from 1990. Pretty dramatic. http://www.caranddriver.com/features...ecades-feature

POST 12Original post

What a silly comparison. A 930 turbo made 282bhp on a good day. It also likely has the 4 speed gearbox and who knows what the upkeep was like. That it failed to outperform a car 13 years its junior is not terribly surprising. Also the guy who drives the cars in this video is hatefully annoying.

So that's what you look like. Not the least bit surprising really...

I think you missed the point. Prices on air cooled 911's have reached the point of ridiculous and the 930 Turbo's reach $100k and beyond. Yes these cars are more of an "investment" but the idea that for 20-25% of their cost you can have a 911 that outperforms them. As far as being 13 years newer is concerned, a 30 year old 944 Turbo would come closer to hanging with the 996 than the 930 Turbo did and you can pick one of them up for under $10k

POST 15Original post

Has anyone ever done a 3.4 v. 3.6 996 comparison? I personally never entertained the 3.4 as an option and waited for a 3.6.... But after all these videos I'm not sure there is much of a difference?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 13160694

Well then you miss the point of air cooled cars, or vintage anything. The performance is secondary the feel and engagement of the driving experience, along with the classic looks is the reason people spend big bucks for these cars and not for thr 996

Really ridiculous comparison as they completely left off the 928 which in all years it was produced was Porsche's fastest and highest N/A HP car.

POST 18Original post

Alan...thanks for the thread...the guys in the video were having fun and obviously weren't trying to take things as seriously as many here do. Anyone who would consider buying a 996 as an investment should not go into money managing as a career. But, if you bought it for the fun to drive factor, as one of the guys in the video says, you made the best buy out there. I've decided to keep my 2013 GTI as the collector car...drive it only on rare occasions and to car events. The 996 will be my daily flogger...every stone chip and piece of bird crap will by a badge of honor until it looks like the beat up old 356 in a long ago Paul Newman movie.

POST 19Original post

The guys that produced this particular series of videos focus on a HP per dollar ratio. With that as their only parameter the 996 is a slam dunk winner. I understand exactly what you mean about the tactile "feel" of the older cars, I'm just saying as a great daily driver bang for the buck it's hard to find fault with a 996.

The only thing it proved was that Guards Red Porsches are the slowest of the breed!
