Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I purchased a 2000 996 Cabriolet that seems to have some aftermarket device installed and the dealer had no idea what it is. I was hoping someone out there recognizes it and could tell me what it does. It considers of a round device that is mounted to the windshield and seems to have a logo that is a "y" or an "h". I'm assuming that this is an antenna which could mean that it is a satellite tracking device. In between the two seat heater switches in the center console are three LEDs. The center LED is green and the two outer ones are red. There is a small speaker under the driver's side dash. Finally, there is a volume control switch mounted on the side of the center console on the driver's side. When you start the car the speaker beeps, the red lights flash and the green light turns on. Below are photos of the parts: Anyone know what the heck this is? Thanks!

i think you have the very rare "Nightrider" edition 996 made in 2000

POST 3Original post

i thought maybe a radar detector but i didnt finf anything in searches or maybe some type of lap timer? i doubt its a gps tracker beacuse normally those are hidden so if the car is stolen thet cant easily ditch it

POST 4Original post

+1 on integrated radar detector as best guess--the parts makes sense for that--but no clue which brand other than it is likely NOT a K40, which my 996 Cab has in it.

POST 5Original post

Toll transponder. Some toll system somewhere. J/K, it's a radar detector for some specific microwave band.

POST 6Original post

Looking at the logo it is a device made by the German company Hirschmann, which is known to make antennas for home and car application. http://www.hirschmann-car.com/en/pro...tenna-systems/

POST 7Original post

Looks like an Iridium car antenna; not sure what the **** and LEDs are for.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It does look like this Iridium antenna: http://https://www.iridium.com/produ...-mount-antenna In the spring I'll have to open up the center console and see if I can find any other clues.

POST 9Original post

I used to have an antenna like that for my handsfree phone. It's a nice alternative to an externally mounted antenna.

That's exactly how I had the full K40 setup installed in my 2001 996. Left LED was front right = rear.
