Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking to get my second Porsche. (I have a 944 already). I'm quite handy doing DIY projects on my cars and potentially I may have a lift in my near future. Have done the requisite research on the 911... but two questions for those on this forum... -Is the 996 DIY friendly for normal maintenance and replacing of wear parts such as shocks, brakes, water pump, suspension components, etc? -The one I'm presently looking at is an '01 Carrera 4. Any downsides that I should be aware of on the AWD version? (And yes it does have an IMS and clutch replacement). Thanks for any feedback.

POST 2Original post

For shocks, brakes, suspension....yes it's diy friendly, as friendly as any 944 anyway. Working on the engine itself (water pump) is more difficult than a 944 due to the engine being jammed in the back with little to no room. The model is a 996. A 986 is a boxster.

Thanks. Yes... 996. :-)

POST 4Original post

Yup, DIY friendly. The Carerra 4 is heavier (because of the AWD system), with the same size engine. Different weight distribution. More complexity for the same reason.

POST 5Original post

Yep, easy to work on. Some parts are very expensive though. Wear items are not too bad.
