I've started to look at 911 Cabs. Thinking 2000 - 2007. Yeah I know quite a (price) range and differences. On the 996, other than the IMS/RMS thing what else should one be looking out for? And to the IMS issue, as I'll be looking at higher mileage cars, figure 100k and up, if the IMS has been done by that point is it still an issue? What about the double bearing'ed early ones. Are they typically less of an issue. As to the 997 more or less the same questions. Are the IMS/RMS also an issue on the 997? To the Cab Top part of it... What is there to look out for in the top? I can fix a lot of stuff but not sure I want to have to dig into the top. Thx for the advice guys. Michael

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

This is my high level understanding about IMS. 1) 996.1 - All IMS can be upgraded (I did this with my 996 original engine) 2) 996.2 - Most could be upgraded but maybe some of later model years could not be without cracking the case. 3) 997.1 - Is not upgradeable without cracking the case (I have a 997.1 engine in my 996 and we left in the original IMS for this reason) 4) 997.2 - DFI engine - Does not have IMS (this is why I waited for 2009 997 before I bought it) I am definite about 1 & 2 but Someone needs to verify my understanding on 2 &3 but I think this is close .
Some of the early 2005 997's had the same single row IMSB as the later 996.1 and the 996.2 cars. Not sure how you could tell which is which when looking to buy a car.
