Pretty sure I understand what an AOS on our cars are for, my question is around failure. What actually fails when an AOS goes bad? Is it an internal valve, something electrical? School me please........

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2002 Boxster is on its 3rd AOS. I get around 80K to 120K miles from an AOS. I cut one apart and the failure I found was the fabric reinforced diaphragm had a crack/split probably from material fatigue. The 996 has at least one other failure mode and it involves a crack that lets coolant leak out onto the engine or leak and get into the engine/crankcase.
