Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've always heard that swapping MK2 engine into MK1 ends up a nightmare due to DME differences. Recently I came around Pelican Parts article which explains all possible swaps between different years for a Boxter , mentioning that 2001 being a year which is the most "flexible", thus can accept anything up to 08, all is required is a 7.8 DME and some rewiring. Does the same line of thoughts apply to our 2001 Carreras? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

based on past threads about this topic, the conversion requires way more than just rewiring and 7.8 DME. here's a recent one in case you missed it: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post13184878 try to contact THOLYOAK: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index...ions-34-36-38/

Hmm, thanks. Those guys copied the software from 3.6 to 3.4 saying that plugs were too different to swap the ECUs,. I wander how it would've turned out if the actually put the 3.6 ECU in and did some rewiring? How much rewiring is needed? I searched and searched and all that comes up relates to people putting 3.6 into 1999 or 2000 MY, 2001 seem to be "prewired" for Can Bus according to Pelican's article, but then again, that is for 2001 boxter, I wander how much 2001 boxter is different from 2001 911

Was 2001 the first year of the 986.2? The 986 came out a year ahead of the 996 and since the 996.2's first year was 2002 that would stand to reason that 2001 might be the cut over for the Boxster which could explain the "simplicity" of such a swap.

Here is the Pelican's text : The Boxster 2001 cars are by far the most flexible in which engine you can install in them. The 2001 cars still have the 7.2 DME installed, but most of the other systems of the car were upgraded in anticipation of moving towards the 2002 CAN bus system that integrates various electronic systems on the car. With the exception of the anti-lock braking system, the proper CAN bus systems are integrated into the 2001 chassis and allow the easy installation of the later 7.8 DME. As a result, you can install any 1997-08 Boxster or 996 Carrera motor into these cars without too much difficulty. You can swap in any replacement engine of the same displacement from 2000-02 without having to remap the DME. (for example, a 2001 3.2L Boxster with a blown motor can accept a 2002 3.2L engine with no remapping needed). To install a Carrera 996/997 3.6/3.8 engine or a 2003-08 Boxster/Cayman engine into one of these cars, you need to purchase a new 7.8 DME and then slightly modify the pinouts on the DME connector. In addition, you need to modify the Boxster engine wire harness, as the camshaft position sensors are located on the opposite ends of the engine than on the 5-chain early motors. All of the systems on the car should work normally with one exception: the cruise control will not work properly with the later 7.8 DME unless you upgrade your ABS system as well (swap out the ABS controller and connector).
