Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Looking at my first 996 C2, and have a couple candidates. 1. Private party - 1999, 58k, needs IMS, clutch, RMS, flywheel, AOS (all the $$ goodies). BUT low mileage. 2nd owner. No service records besides IMS 8 years ago at 40k (Retrofit replacement is due). $16.5k 2. Private party - 2000, 95k, had IMS and clutch done 4k ago. Unknown owners as of yet. $17.5k . (This one is just outside Portland if anyone is available for a Rennfax, or has suggestions for mechanic for a PPI) If all else is equal, which seems like a better choice? Is there something to be said for a higher mileage car that has been taken care of, vs a lower mileage car that hasn't been properly updated? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

How many owners? They both have service records? Are they both private parties? Are they the same model year? So many variables... If the 58k car is a 99 with dual row bearing, many will agree it doesn't "need" an IMSB replacement. I paid $16.5k for a '99 with 63k miles in the Bay Area. I knew it had only two owners and it had maintenance records. I feel better knowing it was a two owner car, as many 996s have passed through 5 or more owners. Anyway, good luck with your purchase - seems like in the Bay Area you shouldn't have to go to Portland to find a good example, either!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Apologies Woodman, added more info to the above. Option 1 is 2nd owner, 1999, no service records Option 2 is unknown owners (waiting on report), 2000, w/ service records Both private party. Surprisingly, not a lot of strong C2 candidates in the Bay Area right now, at the right price!

POST 4Original post

1999 all day. I think they are better, more enjoyable cars overall.

POST 5Original post

I agree. Throttle cable instead of e-gas. And a myriad of other small differences. Of course, I am biased.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
