Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We are restoring my dads 912e and adding pop out rear windows in the process. I also remember how great the pop out windows were in my 1979 320i; not air conditioning but pretty great for a skinny college kid. I also really dislike air conditioning even though a live in VIrginia. Does anybody know if a kit is available to put pop out windows in a 996? I searched around and got the shortest search results page ever. Thanks and snarky comments are welcome.

POST 2Original post

I have a cabby it dont get more pop-out than that..

POST 3Original post

I think the way the window is designed and integrated into the exterior rubber gasket you'd have a hard time getting this across the line. Would be interesting though - I have noticed the early 911s have windows like that. Looks like they stopped doing it with the G series possibly?

BMW had them as an option on the 3 series into the early 2000s. It provides a surprising amount of ventilation and quiets the front window as well. We are not installing AC on the 912e so it was a good addition and the mounting holes are already there.

POST 5Original post

I've seen it on a BMW actually - were they also automatic rather than manual?

POST 6Original post

There's a "pop out" on the roof (99.9% of 996's)... I'd say your chances of finding anyone who's done this mod are about 1 in 20,000,000...

POST 7Original post

The quarter glass is a structural member of the car, not a good idea to remove it from the structure by making it a pop out window.
