Ok, so my auto went yesterday whilst sitting in traffic .. all off a sudden the whilst I was crawling in city traffic a guy pulled up and said to be buddy youre car is leaking oil pretty badly.. looked at my dash oil pressure / temp ok, so pulled over and had a look under the car ... auto fluid gushing out pretty badly .. Got Towed, workshop had it up on the hoist last night and diagnosis was torque convertor, and pump seal .. bottom line needs a new auto .. So I was thinking this morning ... how about a manual conversion ? Is this feasible, anyone heard of it done and now how much work is invovled? Thx

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I can't imagine that a conversion would be cheap. Probably better off selling it and buying a 6 speed., but I have no personal experience, just my 2 cents.GL with your repair.
thx, btw ot.. how come my rennlist membership is not showing in my avatar.. i paid my fees a couple months back.

Sorry to hear that about your car...even though it is easy to say 'just buy a 6-speed and not bother with the conversion', that may not be possible in regards to fundage. I would just get the auto replaced and have a good warranty put on it, then you can look into selling it and getting a 6-speed.
looks like thats what I'm doing, workshop is building me a new auto as i type .. cant wait to get it back .. Went past last night and picked up my Gemballa headers and mufflers and sending them back off to the polishers to get them polished up a bit, just for a bit of bling factor ..

Must be a 3.4, eh? Looks like engines and transmissions blow up at the most inopportune times... -td PS: keep us in the loop re: the conversions to manual. A recent Excellence article had such a conversion on an older 911.
What's a good time for an engine/transmission to blow up?
Before warranty expires!!!

In no way was there an implication that blowing and engine or transmission was favorable. Rather, my original statement takes into account that all engine/transmission failures are inherently bad, i.e., you are not going to like it. However, given the premise that something bad has happened, I don't believe there is any argument that there are "better" times for it than others, i.e., more favorable times. For example, running out of gas is bad, but running out of gas 10 feet from a gas station is better than running out of gas 20 miles from the nearest station. And running out of gas 20 miles from a station, but with a working cell phone is "better" than being in a no signal spot. Seems fairly straight forward. Similarly, your engine or transmission blowing while in heavy traffic is not the best time for something catastrophic to happen. It would be much better if you were already at home or already at the dealer for some other reason. I just thought we were all on the same page with the 3.4 engine failures since it happens so frequently. -td

Man, with that logic in mind, if I owned a 996 with a 3.4L engine, the only place I would drive it is in the dealer parking lot! OK, OK, I'm just kidding! No flames, because my flame suit is at the cleaners!

With the general shoddy nature of 3.4s, they are bound to be at the dealer for some other reason anyway. I just leave mine there with a standing order to put out flames daily. -td

Been trying to go down that road for some time. There are some unanswered questions that will probably only be answered once the swap happens. That is, will the disconnection of the tip freak the computer out? No one knows. Will the tip dash cluster freak out once nothing is connected? No one knows. Can you just swap to a manual computer and keep the tip dash cluster? No one knows. I am willing to bet it will work but I cant prove it yet. My car will sit on jack stands if my tranny blows until I try the manual swap. I will not put another tip in unless the swap does not work.
