Hi! Old picture but what is that part? I'm not 100% sure yet (need to verify with a stethoscope) but when the engine is warm that thing makes a loud clicking noise (similar to an engine with a bore scoring issue) If that is the case is that within "normal" sounds?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's the frequency valve for your EGR I believe. My '99 does the same thing and it always scares the hell out of me with all the bore scoring talk. You can unplug it with the engine running to confirm the clicking is coming from that valve, it shouldn't cause any permanent codes. Supercharged, btw?
Thanks - so another term for that is a "regeneration valve". My setup is not supercharged - stock exhaust, cats etc. Just wondering why it behaves like that (clicking that loud)
Oooh. I was looking at the PS pump pulley thinking it looked unfamiliar for some reason. Anyways back to the original question: I'm not sure why it clicks so loudly but I'd guess it's normal. At least anecdotally it's good to know that yours does it too. It's not bore scoring, luckily.
Ive read on this forum the clicking sound is a sign it is beginning to fail. My 99 clicks as well. I have the part but have not gotten around to replacing it yet.
Looks like this relates to another symptom that I have - although not knowing that. I have had always a little bit difficult to add fuel - if I put pistol straight in it usually just clicks like it was full - if I move that a bit sideways it works. Always thought that this was just a "feature". Well, now it appears as these two are related - that regeneration valve / air mass sensor ventilation (in picture) when not working properly has this exact symptom - along with howling sound from fuel cap etc. It controls how fumes from fuel tank etc are processed so that they are not released to the environment and if it is not working properly the valve is closed and it prevents from adding fuel. Downside - Porsche part (# 99611012953) is > 200 usd / eur and Bosch part is only around 30-40 usd - which doesn't work without additional tuning since it is too short....
I thought clicking was normal. I was playing with this with my daughter one day and a 12V battery to explain how it works and if you try to blow through the valve with no power then you cant; when its attached to power it clicks open. Ive always assumed the clicking in the valve is it doing its job of regulating air a bit at a time.
