I have had this done to my Boxster at the dealership at a cost of around $300 (Labor only) I was considering trying it my self on my 996. If so what is the level of difficulty? Any special tools required?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Very easy DIY. No special tools.
Never mind. My bad. I found stuff in the archives.
I did it and it's EXTREMELY easy. Really opens up the front and gives your right leg some room to move around. I think it took about 30 minutes or so. I don't care if you're loaded with money falling out of your pocket, there is no way you should pay $300 to have this done!
People actually pay to do this??
It is a Porsche, you can have anything you want.....at a price. To each their own I will keep mine in.
Absolute DIY. One of the mods I did recently. Only time killer is that you need to loose the whole center console (piece where hand brake is located) as you won't fit the carpet piece in there otherwise. BTW if you have any other interior color than black, forget the small plastic plate to cover the open space in front of the shifter - looks awful. I took some leather from the removed side of the console and put it there instead.
What does it look like with the console deleted? You know - this thread is useless without pics. Stefan

Thanks! I had the right idea, but not descriptive enough.
