I take back what I said earlier in another post - go CPO - I had to take my car in today - the light for low coolant came on. I have antifreeze and oil intermixed in the engine. I have engine failure and am getting a NEW ENGINE AND COOLING SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I shouldn't be so damn happy, but I AM!! I effectively just got a new car and extended the engine on my motor for two years (CPO was going to expire in a couple months). For those of you that keep your cars in your garage, the guy said driving this car was the best thing I could do. If it was a garage queen, this easily could have been delayed until after warranty but would have eventually happened. I just dodged a massive $$$ bullet - have a great weekend!!!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Wow - congrats. That will renew your love for the car in a big way, and remove any doubts you had about keeping it out of warranty. At least it cannot be a SUPER big bill now.
For what it's worth, I posted this thread before I've even called my wife. She won't understand my joy like my rennlist brothers will. I was thinking about selling the car, but now: NO WAY. I can't wait to break in my brand new engine in a couple/few weeks!!!
HIP-HIP-HOORAY!!
Just for the record - Year and mileage? And well done on the CPO!!!!!!
Great timing! And congrats on your new car!
LOL!! Congrats, I only have a couple months left too..
just tell her that the glass is now half full, not half empty as it was a few weeks ago!
Good question - I should have shared this but am too damn relieved and excited. The car is a 2000 Cab, so 3.4L (obviously). I bought the car with 35,000 miles and now have 48,000. I've been driving it a lot lately and have been driving it hard (not abusive, just the way I think it should be driven). I kept the car in the garage too much during year one but have been driving it much more as I knew my warranty days would end one day soon (Oct 2, 2007). It never showed one sign of problems before today. Driving the car much more recently made me rethink selling it and I now just feel so fortunate to own this car and am so glad I paid the premium.
Good for you! And for everyone else with a 3.4 engine, or a 986 from '97-'01 - all I can say is Statistically, this almost never happens.... right Dell?
Jonathan Palmer Motorsport has several 3.4-litre cars which are driven hard on the track every day, he says. These engines are running fine, whereas maybe those that have been driven more sedately seem to suffer problems!... However, the key thing for us is the five to ten percent figure. That means that around 90 to 95 percent of early 996s out there are likely to be free of major trouble. And that, we reckon, is a gamble worth taking.
While the 'use it or loose it' rule applies nicely to issues such as RMS leaks, the block failure that leads to intermix is a manufacturing QC issue, and given enough cycles, an engine with the QC issue will eventually fail, usually in the same place. from the same article: Their estimate of 5-10% failure is no more valid than me asking my pizza delivery boy to make a guesstimate. The only people who know the number, are Porsche, and they aren't telling!
If you'd like to see what happens - then go here: http://glenn986s.zoomshare.com/0.html This is a M96 (986) block after 92,000 miles - failure as described above. Mileage is no guarantee that you block is 'immune' I'm afraid.
That's the right way to look at it. It's a lottery win. If CPO was worth the money for every owner and every car, then the premium for CPO would be, like, $50,000. It's insurance. You gambled and won. I'm really happy for you.
I agree with you and thank you, because other than Black Jack, I normally lose $$ when I gamble. Also, I'm not trying to make anyone worry if they don't have CPO. I think I'm in the minority, or hope for everyone that I'm in the minority with this engine failure. In an ideal world, I would be happy to be the last person to experience this. I have always read the posts about this thinking it would never happen to me and it did. I feel very fortunate to be "covered". I have wasted so much money over the years on insurance and warranties on products that it feels good to finally be able to cash in.
I felt the same way as I got my new motor 3 weeks before the 4 year warranty was up. You will love the motor and I am with you, it is like winning the $13,000 lottery. The new motor runs like a top.
Somewhat same story here. No CPO but ext warranty (almost as good). Before: 2000 C2 Cab, 67,000 miles Now: 2000 C2 Cab, 670 miles Loving it!
You are a Lucky Mushroom! Congrats!
so what do i need to do to ... you know ... get the new engine?
Hey, not fair!!! I want a brand-new ENGINE!!! (
I wish I knew. I never took this car past 4k RPM until fully warmed up, I checked the oil and coolant reguarly, I let it purr a bit at lower RPMs before shutting off the engine. I only wish I knew how the previous owner treated the car so that I could give some indication about whether this would have happened if it has always been treated "properly". I feel kind of bad stirring up this hotly debated topic about engine failure, but I had to share the news with everyone here. You should have seen the looks I got in my office when I was excited about my engine failing and requiring replacement. Everyone thought I was insane.
Same thing here. Had a few months of CPO left when oil/coolant intermixed on my 3.4L. Was *soooo* relieved when they started the phone call with "We've already got a motor coming from Germany covered by your CPO"... My dad pushed me to get a CPO, and I definitely "won" that lottery.
PHP Code: the guy said driving this car was the best thing I could do. This rings true for any modern Pcar, the 356 and 914 are in a league of their own.
Same thing here, oil/coolant intermixed on 3.4L. Previous owner got a new engine but since it was just out of warranty Porsche cut the price in half for him. I bought it 1500 miles later :-)
Man I am happy fo you but sorry does not make me feel any better, here is hopeing these type of issues are in the 1-2%.
