I am not particularly liking my short shifter. The throw of the stock one was too long, but I think this one is too short for my liking. If I remember correctly, the 997 shifter was advertised as being about 15% less throw. So a couple of questions in case anyone might know: Would the stock 997 shifter fitted in the black bracket simply drop into a 996? I am thinking of a wrecking yard as a source for this. Would just the 997 shifter part fit into the B&M bushings? Actually I have the OEM short shifter, but they are the same. Finally, would the stock 996 shifter go back in with the B&M bushings?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In decreasing order of confidence: The stock 996 shifter will definitely go back in with the new (B&M) bushings. Given that the SSK part is the same for the 996 and 997 I am assuming the 997 shifter will fit in the 996. If this is true it will fit with the new bushings. It's a pretty good idea. I like the B&M piece, but it is on the short side. The stock 997 shifter is great - in fact it's the reason I got the B&M for my 996. Let us know how it goes.
