New owner of an '03. CPO. I have 3k in the car myself, and the car has right at 15k on the clock. Now that I am used to the car, I am noticing an occasional bump at around 2700 to 3000 rpms when accelerating mildly/with light throttle. When I acclerate with a little more throttle it is not there. No real pattern that I can discern except this only happens when I am barely accelerating. My guess is the variocam (plus?) is kicking in and I am feeling it... Any thoughts? Also, I am taking the car in for the 15k shortly so any advice on what to share with the service deparment on this appreciated. Thanks in advance. JKC

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

J, What tranny. What gear (if gear specific). Also, does it dissipate or feel different after warmup. If Tip' tranny, you may be sensing the torque converter. You can often sense it in 2nd and sometimes 3rd during easy acceleration and more prominent when tranny is cold. RB
Thanks for the reply. Manual transmission, so not the torque converter. No real pattern that I can detect... warm vs. cold, low gears vs. high gears, brands of gasoline, a/c on vs. off, etc... Again, this does not happen when I am accelerating at a decent clip... Only when I am barely applying the throttle. The car was a CPO, does not run hot, drives well and has no issues or leaks so I am not terribly concerned but was just wondering.
Variocam.
I have an 2004 C4S Cab with manual transmission and also notice a slight "bump" at about 3,200 RPMs. I'd describe it as a slight increase in acceleration - almost like you pushed the accelerator just a bit. Interestingly, I have the sport exhaust and the "bump" occurs at the same time as the exhaust note gets a bit throatier. All-in-all, I think it's pretty normal and agree that it is a product of the vario-cam...... BTW, the "bump" occurs in any gear, but always around 3,200 RPM.
Mine has the same engine surge at about 3k under light throttle. It is the cam timing shift. The BMW M-car engines have similar characteristics athough more gradual.
Thanks folks. That is what I was suspecting and hoping to hear. Appreciate the information. JKC
I'm pretty sure it's variocam like 1999 said. Cam timing doesn't shift until around 6200 rpms.
It is the variocam. My '04 C2 variocam "kicks in" at 3,200 RPM.
Karlo...................Ditto! Steve
