Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Will 2004 GT3 mufflers be a direct bolt on for my 2001 996? Also, do they have a different sound than the stock 996 mufflers? I have a chance to buy a pair for a good price but don't want to buy them if they either don't fit or won't make the car sound better.

POST 2Original post

No, different engine, different manifolds, different cats.

POST 4Original post

Actually, I am resonably certain that the plumbing is exactly the same after the headers. As an example, Fabspeed seems to have one part # for their 996/GT3 mufflers, same goes for the muffler bypass pipes and cat bypass pipes. The cats themselves should be different, but the dimensions of the pipes are the same. That being said, when I pulled the mufflers of my GT3, they appear to be exactly the same as a regular old triple pass 996 muffler. The GT3 owes its sweet sound to the engine, not the exhaust.
