Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I'm hard-wiring a GPS antenna into my '99 996. Can somebody please tell me where to attach the ground and 5V inputs? FWIW, I've hard-wired my Valentine One behind the center console, but am otherwise a car-audio install newb. [I was hoping to follow those same instructions, but then the V1 is 12V, whereas the GPS is 5V (and requires a 1A fuse).] A picture of the GPS wiring requirements is shown below. Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Dave

You cant get 5V from your 12V car. Unless you make a reducing circuit to reduce the voltage to 5V. I've never done that before. How do you know the unit is 5V? It shows the source as a car battery, which is always 12V. I think if this unit is meant to go in a car (which I cant be sure of because I have no idea what you have got there) , maybe you are reading something into it thats not fact. It should have its own power regulation built in. Well, its yours so it wont be any loss to me if it blows up. So heres what the diagram shows: All grounds go to ground. Pin 5 ground, pin 3 black ground, pin 5 black ground (drain wire). Chassis ground anywhere you like. The positive which is terminal 2 red goes to 12V. Any 12V positive source.

I've copied the electrical characteristics from the manual below. This GPS antenna comes in four varieties, all identical in appearance. I purchased the LVC version because it comes with open ends (for threading through the dash and hard-wiring to the car). The "PC" version comes with a voltage regulator built into its cigarette-lighter plug; I verified this with Garmin support. No point in buying this version if I'm gonna snip the plug off anyways. This pretty much reverts it to an LVC. I guess I'll look for a regulator of some sort at Radio Shack. Thank you for your help! Knowing that the 996 (or any car, for that matter) doesn't provide a 5V power source helps. Dave
