Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone. I am quite concerned. Most of the time when starting cold my lifters rap, knock or whatever word would best describe it. I just started my 03' C2 after it has been parked for 18 days. The rapping started right away and lasted about 5-6 minutes or so gradually getting quieter. Sometimes it does not rap when started cold, but most of the time it does. Seems to be coming from passenger side. Once warmed up and driven it no longer raps. Any ideas? should concern abound? Thanks everyone P.S. 3300 miles on her, factory 0W-40 Broken in by the book NEVER Overreved nor redlined for that matter

POST 2Original post

If you don't drive it for several days, the lifter noise for the first 5 minutes or so is apparently "normal." My last Carrera, which was a weekend car (and sometimes not driven for 2 weeks at a time) would often have the lifter noise if I hadn't driven it for a while. Something to do with all the oil draining down to the bottom of the engine when left undriven.

POST 3Original post

This condition is VERY VERY normal!!!!! Swepco makes an additive, that quiets lifters...but why ADD junk to your/our oil just to over thicken things.... I know the noise is alarming, but for peace of mind, its totally OK!!!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys... I just put some STP Oil Treatment and she purrs like a kitten Just kidding

POST 5Original post

my car does the same thing every morning but only last maybe 2-3 mins. it has 51k miles on the clock.

POST 7Original post

You can always pop the heads off and rotate all the lifters so that the holes point up.

POST 8Original post

Yup. Normal normal normal. Happened on both my '02 and '03 Carrera's, neither of which got/gets much use. -DT
