I am in the process of having my '00 996 rebuilt. Among the parts that were missing was the A/C control unit. I managed to find one on ebay for a decent price, but when it was installed and the car hooked up to a battery, the control unit didn't light up. All the functions seemed to work, the fan speed buttons, etc. just no display. When I wrote the seller he told me that the control unit needed to be "version coded" to my car and this needed to be done by a dealership with a special computer. Can anyone verify?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I called my local dealer to see whether they could verify the validity. They said that they do have a computer that can "version code" the unit to a specific model, but it will cost me $100 to do and they can't guarantee that that is the problem with the unit. I am somewhat hesitant because the functions all work, just the LCD doesn't. Before I invest the money to find, I would appreciate it if anyone has more insight.
