Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi! My name is Chris and I am a newbie looking for recommendations and opinions on the 1999 and newer 911. I have been driving a 500SL on the weekends for 7 years and am ready to step-up my fun factor. Mainly, I 'd like to know which coupe and/or convertible model(s) is(are) best, and what you think of water-cooled vs air-cooled? My budget is around $40K. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

For around 40k you'll be looking at a coupe. You may consider going for a newer model year, as they may still have some of the factory warranty left. Additionally, the 99's were the first model year and has some early production issues that were corrected in later models. Once you've picked the car, get a PPI, (porsche certified inspection) its $200 for any dealer, it will help you avoid a lemon. As far as which is best that is a totally subjective measure, top-down driving on weekends is great, so cabs are fun. Racing on the weekends, also fun, coupes are typically better track cars (tho you can still track a cab). Regardless of which you go with one option that most agree on is PSM. The air v. water cooled is a HUGE debate, the bottom line, they are both great, just different. If you want MY99 or later you're getting water-cooled... Which ever way you go you wont be disappointed...good luck!

Boy........try asking that over on the 993 Board and you would already have quit afew 'suggestions' All seriousness aside, these boards are a great source making decisions like yours. Check out the other boards, see what what the general tone is in each, what kinda people like what and why. My $.02........you may (or may not) be aware that the last 911 series before the current 996s was the 993. It is a classic and the last in the evolution of the air-cooled. 96-98 993's had Vario-ram engines (a good thing). I'd highly recomend these cars as a start in your Pcar experience. Understand they will seem 'rough around the edges' compared to your SL. The 996 that followed is cut from a different cloth as Porsche introduced dif production techniques, engine design, and began mktg to a slightly broader & different demo. I saw the comment on the Boxster. I'm going to agree that the Box is a great car & great value (especially if you want a cab)......downside is they are everywhere. Also.... if you really want a cab, the 993 is OK but coupe would be a better choice there (IMHO). I'm not biased........just trying to help.........sold my Box last year, & currently own late model Pcars (and a 993 ) Good luck.......have fun shopping.
