Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A friend with a 2006 Tiptronic has a mid-pitch noise coming from the front end of his car. The noise gets louder with speed. Wheel bearings have been checked. Is there a way to definitively diagnose a problem with the front diff?

POST 2Original post

That question should be posted on the 997 forum. The 996 utilizes a mechanical AWD system with a viscous coupling. The 997 utilizes a computer controlled, electronic AWD system. I don't know how the 997 differential compares to the 996 differential. FWIW, my front diff started making noise before it failed. It started as a subtle gear whine and eventually became louder, almost sounding like a slipping belt. Eventually it began to leak just prior to having it rebuilt.

POST 3Original post

There are bearings on the side of the diff where the half shafts hook up. I had one go bad. Made more noise when turning though. 2003 Carrera 4S Speed Yellow / 1955 356 Continental 1500 Rust Red

My apologies. This was meant for the Cayenne forum

It was only the later 997's (post 2010?) that didn't use the mostly NON-FUNCTIONAL VC system.

POST 6Original post

I thought the 997.1 was computer controlled. It was a viscous coupling also?
