Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking for an upgrade to my 01 996 Cabriolet. Decision right now is between a 2004 Turbo Cabriolet or $10,000 more and get 2009 non- turbo cabriolet. In the 04 turbo I get a 996 but no problem with the IMS. In the 09 normally aspirated 997 I get a newer car with nice features and no problem with the IMS. What would you choose and why? Car would not be driven in ice or snow or tracked.

POST 4Original post

Turbo - More fun... Less depreciation. and $10,000 pays for several years of maintainance

POST 5Original post

I believe Porsche did away with the IMS in 2009?

POST 6Original post

Turbo. As scorchpa pointed out, it should be more fully depreciated. Better value and a big pile of cash to do other things with.

POST 7Original post

I have had both 996 turbo and 997.2 at the same time, but i chose to keep the 996 tt, because you cannot find too much excitement from the 997 interior. The 996 tt is the way to go.

quoted from this thread of yours: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-question.html If things are different now that you can choose between the Turbo or the more expensive 997....go for the one that you really like. But to answer your question: I pick the TURBO. No reason needed for me.....its a gut thing, emotional and NOT rational.

What do you expect when you post in the 996 forum?

POST 15Original post

I know my logic isn't in sync with many others, but out of the original posters options, I'd take the 997.2. IMHO, a cabriolet is never going to be a great high performance choice. It's a grand-touring/lifestyle/look-at-me/fun-to-the-sun choice, and for that type of driving, I'd take a 997.2 cab hands down, probably with PDK. Now for a less comfortable, more driver/driving oriented car, my choice would be a 996.2 Turbo COUPE with six-speed. And while the 996 turbo's are great cars and don't have that pesky IMSB which can cost a whopping hundreds of dollars ;-) to fix proactively, they DO have several other potential issues like troublesome coolant pipes and errant spoilers. Which have associated costs that can make preventatively swapping in a new IMS bearing look downright cheap! But the 997.2 does likely have much more depreciation in the pipe vs. a 996.2 turbo...

POST 17Original post

I think I would need to drive both and see. Most likely I would take the 997.2 though due to its newer style, something diff than 996, and rwd. I have had my 996 for almost 9 yrs now so I don't mind having something that looks newer like the 997 (definitely not the 991 though. Too GT, too much electronics and not DIY friendly). The 996 TT may hold its value better but I tend to keep cars for a long time so that's not a problem for me. Everything in the 997 will also be much newer so I can keep it for a very long time without feeling out if style. However if you crave hp above all, I think the tt will be hard to beat.

POST 18Original post

Definitely 997.2! Newer, better reliability (09 is supposed to be most reliable 911 acc. to Consumers Report), less maint cost, etc
