Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've noticed a distinct difference in the sound level inside the passenger cabin of my AE vs. my friends 03 C2. Both are completely stock low mileage cars. The AE seems to have a louder more aggressive sound inside the cabin even upon slight acceleration and more so on heavy acceleration. I know they have different factory intakes, the AE having a cast intake and the C2 a black composite intake. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this or if maybe one of our cars has a mod that we don't know about as both were purchased used. Prior owners on both say no mods but who knows. Neither appear to have any mods to the exhaust system and the louder sound is only noticed inside the passenger cabin.

POST 2Original post

Having been in Sarki's car I will say the cabin roar is significantly louder than my C2. I will be curious what the cause of it is.

POST 3Original post

After 5500 rpm the variocams kick in and the glorious sound really begins. Now if you want to really hear something do FisterD muffler mods and orange cap mod and will sound really amazing. Ask me how I know

POST 4Original post

Interesting. Mine is louder than others I have heard but I have after market exhaust and assumed that was reason. I would be curious to know if the intake has a role as well.

The variocams kicking in are a distinct possibility but I could swear the louder cabin starts at a lower RPM than 5500. I'll have to check that out and pay a bit more attention to see if it's RPM specific at 5500 and higher. Either way it's music to my ears, the wife.........well that's a different story!

POST 6Original post

Yes, it is. I love driving around windows down to just to hear the sound of my FisterD and intake tube mod. If you have not done FisterD's and orange cap mod I urge you to listen to someone's car that has best bang for your buck mods you can do. Way too tame from factory, now it sounds the way it should have rolled off the assembly line to begin with.

POST 7Original post

Combination of intake manifolds, modified heads/cams will affect the sound. I'm not sure if this is what you're specifically hearing tho.

POST 8Original post

Are you positive that it isn't modified? I've bought "stock" 996s with Eisenmann mufflers, Cargraphic mufflers, K&N intake, and an EvoMS intake. Mufflers in particular are hard to tell, especially after they get dirty. It's not the Variocam, you and your friend (and every other 996) have it. Slightly different between 996.1 and 996.2.
