Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Considering purchasing a manual 996 coupe. I'm in Southern Cal and would prefer a "local" deal. My budget is low 30s range and I'd prefer '02+. I realize this combo dictates somewhat higher miles which is okay as long as records are strong and maintenance/service regular. Color preferences are white, silver, yellow, grey... probably not red or black. I am a cash buyer and am ready whenever the right car comes along. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

low 30's are a bit tough in so cal for a nice '02... it's worth bumping the budget to mid 30's, you'll open your door many more cars... i've researched all of southern ca...

A agree. There seems to be quite a jump in price from an 01 to 02 model. I picked up a nice 02 996 from DC Motors of Anaheim. They have probably 20 996's in stock and are a great company to deal with. Ask for Todd. http://www.dcmotorcars.com/ There a high end and exquisite dealer but make you feel very welcome. Plus you get to sit in cars you'll probably never afford in your lifetime, such as an Merc SLR McLaren... $500,000 new, was 2 yrs old with 10k on it, was selling for $300,000... that's some depreciation!!!

Yep, I agree with both of you regarding the difficulty getting an '02+ at this price point... seems like the 60k+ mile examples are getting closer though, depending on options and condition. Mr Groove, my office is right down the street from DC Motors and I agree with you that they're good guys and have nice cars. Problem is, they want a premium for them too! There are several specialty dealers in and around OC that have high inventories of 996's, and they all tend to ask pretty high prices for them. From what I've seen, a nice '01 turbo can be had in the private market for around the same price as some of these dealers want for an NA "S".

Just stay away from the gernade store, i mean Autohaus West. If you are curious, do a search here, but I had a very bad experience with them.

POST 6Original post

Jeff, I'm sure you know this but CraigsList is your friend - and LA and OC are the ones to watch. I picked my 03 up from Beverly Hills, private deal from CL, but the price was no where near what you're after. Best of luck. Chris.

Yep, I've experienced them first hand just once and that was enough. Yeah, and I check them often. It appears prices are really getting hammered right now with most of the aftermarket lux brands. I just sold my M5 for several $k less than it would have gone for just one year ago. Thanks for feedback guys.
