My A/C has a slow leak somewhere - usually takes a few months to go from full to empty (2nd time). My preferred place can't get me in for another month and I'm dying in this 95f weather (dark blue car and no A/C is not a good combination). I have the necessary equipment for an A/C recharge and have done this before but this time the pressure is so low that the A/C clutch is not engaging. No clutch = no refill = no cold air! Does anyone know a safe way to force the clutch to engage so that I can get some R134a in there until I get to the garage? Thanks!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, I am no AC expert but I can find nothing in my references that require the clutch to be engaged and the compressor running to refill the system with refrigerant. The few times I have encountered a car having its A/C system serviced -- the A/C machine connected to the car -- the engine was off.
Macster, This is the procedure that I followed previously. As you can see it involves having the engine running. Charging the AC of a Porsche 911 - YouTube As we can both plainly see you need to open the BLUE valve (low pressure) to recharge. Unfortunately for me my memory was faulty from the last time I did this (when I followed the instructions instead of my memory) and was trying the red valve. So, thanks to your reply forcing me to go back to the video I started with...I now have AC again! I could, of course, have just quietly let it drop and saved myself embarrassment but I'm hoping someone else can avoid being a bone head. Thanks!!
The refill can(s) should provide enough pressure to charge the system to a minimum level needed to overcome the low pressure switch without the engine running.
