POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did anyone buy their 996 on Ebay? If so how was the experience? I notice a number of cars trading between dealers, and a lot never meet the reserve. There are a few, what looks like high end dealers, putting cars on Ebay, and their web sites look real nice, most have 100% feedback.

POST 2Original post

I found mine on ebay. It didn't meet reserve, it was 45 min away, so I went to see it in person and bought it for less. Ebay is a great advertising tool, but to actually purchase thru ebay, I am not sure what sort of buyer protection it actually provides for autos.

POST 3Original post

Yes and no.. It started on ebay but by the time I got all the money together the auction ended.. The car didnt meet reserve. I used this time to really look into the seller. I got him to friend me on face book. I then talked to him a bit via phone and email and got a feel for the guy and made sure everything that was coming out of his mouth was true.. all the way down to his payoff... I didnt want to buy the car from someone that was flipping it or a dealer.. or a power seller.. I wanted to buy a car from the person that owned the car for a while... I after I felt Ok with the sale I sent the guy the money and had the car picked up. I paid 17 for a NICE 99 Aero with 103K on the clock.

I bought my Boxster almost seven years ago on eBay from the original owner. As Kyle said you need to talk with the seller and be able to make a judgment call on their character. In my case the seller and I agreed that the sale be contingent on a successful PPI and he helped deliver the car to the local Porsche dealer whom I had arranged and scheduled the inspection with and agreed to meet with the shipping company. In my case the service advisor at the dealer was also very helpful at walking me through car as I was buying long distance (& out of the country) and he was essentially my eyes on the ground. I was given all service records from the PO including tire and battery warranty info. He even included a scrap book that included copies of all the press on the then new Boxster in a small binder and extended aftermarket warranty information that was never mentioned previously in the sale. I even got a Christmas card from him the first year. We finalized the sale and transferred the funds outside of eBay so there was no buyers protection other than me trusting my gut after roughly a weeks worth of back and forth with the seller going over the various details involved in transferring ownership of a vehicle. At times I look back on this transaction and feel like I was very lucky & dodged what could have turned out badly if the seller (a complete stranger) had not been an honest person and wonder why all lifes major dealings dont work out as smoothly. regards, Aron

In 2006 I bought a '03 Boxster S that started out on eBay, then ended up buying it straight from the dealer. I sold the car in 2009 on eBay after 3 1/2 years of trouble free service. I just bought a '01 996 that was listed on eBay, but again the listing expired and I dealt with the dealer direct. So far so good, other than the water pump just going out at 59,000. The dealer completed the 60k maintenance prior to me negotiating the deal. Like the above guys said, a LOT of communication and a PPI is imperative.

Bought 3 cars and a Harley on ebay. I've spent well over $100k. Ebay doesn't make it safe, unsafe, good, bad, or anything else. You must do your homework and take proper steps to be assured you get exactly what you expect.

POST 7Original post

I've bought 3 Porsches, 2 MBZ's, and 2 trucks off E-Bay over 8 years or so. Never had a missrepresentation, only great experiences. Due diligence is the key....

POST 8Original post

My current '01 cab started out on eBay at a local MBZ dealer. 3 days after it didn't meet reserve I went in (it was raining!) and offered cash subject to a ppi. My prior '91 Targa came from Craig's List 350 miles away. I also spoke to the owner over 3 days, was to stupid to do a ppi and flew up and drove it straight home. It was a great car! Alternatively, I bought 2 real turds from eBay (with inspections) from the Mid West and East Coast. You never know but from now on it's "PPI or Die". I've also sold 4 cars on eBay: 1 went to Australia (69 Boss) and MBZ to Germany. This forum can hook you up with REAL local talent to look over a car or that can tell you a local shop to use....

POST 9Original post

I,ve bought several vehicles on ebay. An older 911 with a 3.6, 3 trucks and lots of parts. Only sold one car thru it but did well. Biggest purchase I made was a 34 ft sailboat . I only felt ripped off once when I bought a diamond tennis bracelet for my wife. It arrived and I had it appraised . Jeweler told me it was probably worth what I paid (barely). It only had ONE real diamond rest were fake. It was described as "A" diamond bracelet so no recourse with ebay. Ask lots of specific questions.

Found mine on ebay. Did not hit go through the "auction" process but negotiated directly.

POST 11Original post

I found mine on eBay. It didn't meet the reserve but I worked it out with the seller. I've found my last five cars on eBay, actually, and agree with the poster that said there isn't anything good or bad about eBay--it's just a way to find cars. Some people think it's a horrible idea, but I don't see the difference between it and any other method of finding cars.

POST 12Original post

Mine is from ebay, smokin deal. The dealer IS Imports in San Luis Obisbo lied about several things I had to pay to fix but still did ok. Rear tires showing steel cords,no wind screen, leaking IMs...

POST 13Original post

Found my 40th on ebay. Didn't go through the "auction" process but negotiated directly with the seller after the auction ended.

POST 14Original post

Found my '04 996 on ebay. Watched it go through two auctions without being sold and contacted seller, a non Porsche dealer, directly. Negotiated a lower price and picked it up 5 days later.

POST 15Original post

I bought mine on ebay this past March sight unseen. I won it on a non-reserve auction and transported it up from Florida to Buffalo where I picked it up and drive it over the border. Great car - loving this summer that is for sure.

POST 16Original post

Autotrader here..never bought a car on ebay but lots of parts...never had an issue.

POST 17Original post

Just bought my '02 Turbo on eBay. Paid the buy it now price since a bidding war was starting. But the guy lived in Atlanta along with me so I could go see it and get it inspected myself. The car was awesome and it checked out - so I paid him the remainder with a Bank Check. I almost bought another one from a dealer in Arizona - had my inspector lined up...but the local Turbo seemed a better deal and went that route.

I found mine on Autotrader almost 4 years ago.

POST 20Original post

Remember I specifically ask about multiple items that Smith Volvo specifically lied about.

POST 21Original post

bought mine through AutoTrader - Porsche dealer in San Diego

POST 22Original post

Saw my Turbo on Ebay (purchased it off line with the seller directly). I had already done my homework and new more about the sellers car than he did, so no unknown issues here. Ebay is a great vehicle for uncovering targeted cars across the US.
