Hey guys, what's the consensus on water ingress to the intake area for the K&N kit? Seems like there might be a risk of water getting through the grates. Please keep out the omg your maf dies the day you order the kit comments.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Nothing to worry about. If you're in a situation where enough water is getting sucked up to damage the engine, you probably have a much larger problem on your hands than the intake sucking in water.
So something like a torrential downpour would be of no risk? The K&N kit had no top on it; I suppose I could add an extra shield of sort
The K&N has a sock like cover that goes over the filter element that repels water. I don't use it as I don't usually drive in the rain, and in my mind, it would restrict the improved air flow the filter supposedly gives you.

You're fine. Anything just short of completely submerging the intake is water is not going to hurt the car, nor cause it to inject enough water to cause any kind of damage. I've had multiple cars over the years with vented hoods that had the filter exposed directly to rain/snow that I drove that way year round, and I live in Seattle.
next time you have the hood up, take a look at it, pretty much solid other than openings for the air intake and heat extraction fan.
I have never had an issue with K&N filters in over 20 years. Just my personal experience. I have one on my 996. It is the Fabspeed intake but pretty much a K&N filter.
OMG your MAF is going to die, as well as losing HP because you no longer have a cold air intake.
^ Uh oh...
My MAF died right when I put the intake into my shopping cart on amazon.
I had a K&N in mine, never had a problem with it taking on water in the 6 months I had it installed and daily driven. But as most say I did have problems with my MAF, I would always get a MAF code thrown when the oil from the filter would gum up the sensor. Yes I cleaned the filter numerous times, I won't say K & N intakes are bad, the piping is alright, but I would highly suggest a dry AEM cone filter for the unit.
I'm sure you've heard or hurricane Sandy. My area got about 4 inches of rain that 1 day. Drove 1.5 hours through it without a hiccup. K&N kit with taco wing if that makes a difference.
