Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, Installing a new ignition switch. Got the old one out without issue. New one will not insert all the way. It is lined up, and I can feel the spring springing. It just is not going in all the way. The switch does look different than the one I took out, and it is taller (which I know that may be the issue), but the new switch does look like all of the switches in the DIYs. It is also the image that comes up when searching for the new switch. I also know the original switch was redesigned, and pretty sure I took out the original switch (still had the threadlock that I had to scrape off). Do I have the wrong switch, or am I just doing something wrong. Have a couple more switches (one that looks like the old one) on their way from Amazon (same day/next day), but would be good to know if I am just doing something wrong. One more note, I can get the old switch to go in without any issue. Pic of the two switches. New one is on the right.

Did you match part numbers - old and new the same? Did you order a part number as specified in the PET book? It's obvious from your picture that the parts are different and no matter how much you force the new switch, it isn't going to fit.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am actually not sure what the part number is from the new one. I bought it four years ago when I first bought the car to have ready when the switch went. It is a bit confusing since entering the correct part number shows both versions of the switches, and both say that they fit the car. Hopefully one of the two new ones I have coming will do the trick.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looks like I figured it out. The switch I pulled out of my car is the updated switch for the upgraded complete mechanism. The new switch is the old style. I purchased the old style (assuming it still had the original mechanism). Turns out it had been replaced.

Something has failed. Occasionally the key will just spin, and is hard to get out. Figured I would start with the switch since (I thought) I already had it. New switch should be here today. I already had the seats out since I was swapping the stock seats for the track seats since track season starts this week. Having the front seat out makes it very easy.

LEFT: new style vs RIGHT: old style... your old switch has been updated with new style ign lock assembly, must get new style switch (2004+)

Yep. That's what it was. Never thought I would have an updated switch. Anyway, Amazon delivered it in 19 hours for $9. All installed and all good.
