A nasty surprise! A few days ago I discovered that the rear window of my 1998 996 was cracked. It had a hole in the middle and the glass splinters were inside the car and some on the rear lid. I am sure that no one has touched the car, so it must have been caused by tension in the glass. I have already contacted my Porsche dealer and they said they had never heard of a 996 rear window cracking spontaneously. Yesterday I removed the rest of what was left of the window trying to make sure none of the glass splinters fell into one of the many openings of the body. The Porsche dealer is going to put a new window in the car, a job they hire an outside firm for. As I do not want to drive the car to the dealer they might send this firm to my address to fix the problem. I wonder whether installing a rear window requires removal of (part of) the rear trim or whether anything else has to be done. Undoubtedly, Porsche has guidelines as how to install a rear window. Does anyone have these guidelines? Has anyone heard of a 996 rear window cracking spontaneously? If so, what could be the cause(s)? My car is not used during the winter months and is parked in the garage where the temperature is pretty constant. Jo996 the Netherlands

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
