Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi folks, I think my '00 996 battery had died. Do I have to replace it with a genuine porsche battery? Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

POST 2Original post

A $50 battery from Sam's or similar retailer is more than you need. Porsche does not make batteries. It's a personal preferance whether you get a vented or non vented one.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the quick reply. I really appreciate it!

POST 5Original post

I bought a 47 from Costco and it is vented. A whopping $45! And the weight savings of the 47 are great if that is something you are looking for. Pics attached.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Dell, I noticed that the battery is smaller from your picture. How do you mount it in-place?

POST 7Original post

If you notice the close up picture (the one on the right) there is a brass clamp that bolts into the battery tray at several points. YOu can see from the battery tray there is another 3 holes to the left in case you have a larger battery. Neg side of battery slides to the side and locks into place and is secured with the brass clamp.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks; on my way to Costco!

POST 9Original post

very welcome. If you need any help just let me know.

POST 10Original post

Don't forget to charge it. (no one pays cash now a days) LOL.

POST 13Original post

neurons not firing right now....off to get some caffiene!

POST 14Original post

And given the proximaty of the battery to the cabin air intake be absolutely sure that vent tube is hooked up correctly! And if you haven't done this before be sure and clean and burnish(**) the battery posts and the connections before installing the new battery. **repeat each spring.

POST 15Original post

Mine died this summer and I went to Costco for the replacement but they were out of stock. Ended up with one from Autonation for $65. Install was simple.

POST 16Original post

Dell, since the Costco 47 vented battery is a lot smaller, would you expect that it would not last as long between usage?

POST 17Original post

That my friend is a question I wish I knew the answer to. But, at $45 I am not really as worried about it. The next closet battery in price for a 48 I could find was in the $75 range and I honestly don't believe the 48 could last 2x as long as the 47 so to answer your question in a different way......I think cost per day of working ownership is probably similar regardless of size.
