I am currently shopping for a new to me 996 Cabriolet. This will be my first Porsche and I was wondering if there is a "preffered" year to be considering(2001-2004)?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Everyone says 02+, and to get the newest, cleanest, PPI'd car you can afford. I do love my 01 C4cab though...enjoy the search, do not be in a hurry.
I second the PPI, don't leave home without it. If you find a clean early car (under `02) don't be turned off by the nay-sayers. Just love it and care for it and it will reward you in its own special way. Viva la Rennlist!
99-01 are 3.4L and 02-04 are 3.6L, 02-04 cabs have a glass rear window and are also facelifted cars with the Turbo style headlights and newer style bumpers.
I'd rec a C4 cab '02 and later, will be a great daily driver.
02 and newer is the most engine and features for the money. Much better deal than older models.
The 996 was improved upon every year. Get the newest model you can afford. Having said that, old models are great cars too, and you can find some sweet deals out there. My car runs great and I expect it to last for years.
You get a lot more for your money in the '99-01 cars versus the '02-04 with very little difference in performance.
Drive them all. I think you will find that the 02 and up has a better torque band. Also, depending on the suspension you want, I think you will find that the 02 and up has better handling. On the other side of the coin, like teflon jones says, You get a lot more for your money in th 99-01 cars. If I were to buy in this group, I would want all the bells and whistles, with a hot suspension set up and an aero kit to boot. And I would buy it for a steal. Good Luck, Tom L 2002 C2
I am just about to list my 99 C2 Guards Red Cab for sale. She has 17k miles and still under Porsche Warranty through 08/06. Includes factory short shift kit, 18's and Fabspeed Exhaust. I am moving from a house with a 3 car garage to a 1 car so she has to go!
02+ for all the reasons listed above by others I just recently drove a 02 C4 (I own a 00 C4), and it was a real kicker. Better feeling/pulling at low RPM and noticable stiffer.
