I'm toying with the idea of swapping my cab for a 996 hardtop, but during this economic downturn, when there are not a lot of buyers, what is the best way to figure out the realistic cost or sale price of a 996? Everywhere I look there is a huge spread between trade in value and advertised prices. Looking at ebay, cars.com, edmunds, KBB etc. the information doesn't seem realistic. Is there a way to find out up to the day auction data?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have bought and sold several cars this past year including a 996. Ebay auctions (actual bidding, not buy it now prices) will give you a good idea of what the car is actually selling for right now.
Auction prices aren't always a good gauge of the market either. Many times the Porsches going through the auction are really hammered.
For trade value, dealerships still go by the Black Book. They'll hit you first with the rough-book value, you might be able to negotiate average-book value, but rarely "clean" unless there's sufficient markup in the vehicle you're trading for, to cover for the over-allowance in the trade-value. For example, for smackboy's 2002 Carrera 4 Cab, with 50k+ miles....without accessories.... as of Nov 24 (Black Book is updated weekly): rough-book value would be about $26250 average-book value would be about $31750
Just traded my 04 C2 with 46,000 miles on it last week and got 34,000 for it. I bought an 05 C2 with 27K miles on it for 49K w/ CPO. The dealer turned my car in a day for high 30's ... There's a c2 comp for ya.

Maybe, or a lot of dealers just hold on to Targas waiting for the right buyer since they're less common.
Use http://intelliprice.com/ You don't have to give your real information at the last step. I've found it matches auction pricing pretty closely. However, you may be disappointed to find out how much your car goes for at auction.

Well, that is really ugly... my car with 45K miles has an Intelliprice pre-inspection trade estimate of: $25,660 - $34,100
