Is there anything inherently different between that 993 and 996 that would affect its ability to trudge through a couple of inches of snow? Do the comparisons hold for the RWD as well as the AWD models or is there something inherently different in the 996 AWD package compared to the 993 AWD package? Thanks, David

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

David, I can't comment about 993's but my 2000 996 C4 is AWESOME with snow tires. I'm in Michigan and drive it all winter long. I've never gotten stuck. I even drove around when we had 12 inches of snow overnight. It was great fun. Pictures below. In normal driving I think you can get away with 6" to 8" inches on the ground max. This will depend on your suspension and front bumper. I hope this helps. Pat
I think the 993 awd is more mechanical than the viscous clutch mechanism in the 996, but for a daily driver your better off with the latest model.
The 996 C4 also comes with PSM, which was not available on the 993. Both cars are very capable in the snow with the proper tires, the PSM just gives an extra margin of safety while driving. Now with regard to RWD cars, I personally think a PSM equiped car is far superior than a non-PSM equiped car. Can the non-PSM equiped car be driven the answer is YES. However, margin of safety profided by PSM is greater when comparing RWD cars (PSM vs. non-PSM) than when comparing awd cars (PSM vs. non-PSM).
The AWD system in the 996 is better technology than in the 993. And the advent of PSM really makes a HUGE difference!
