Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, While I know the old saying is get the newest one you can afford, I thought I may have heard something down the line that suggests that the '03 model year had a few extra concerns than the '02s or '04s. Just trying to narrow things down a bit. Any feedback would be great. Looking at Targas mostly, btw. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

...think the singling out of the '03 was some statistical unsubstantiated fluke.

POST 3Original post

from a logical perspective the 02 was the first model year with the 3.6 ltr engine. therefore assuming minor tweaks and modifications, i would say mid 03model year or later. note that 996's were also built in 05.

POST 4Original post

This may or may not be important to you, but from '03 onwards, the audio system works on an optical bus (called MOST) which makes it very hard/expensive to upgrade.

POST 5Original post

Um, when you say "I heard something down the line" is it because your source has provided you with data, facts, and evidence, or is it hyperbole, conjecture, opinion, speculation, and guesswork that 2003 models have a few extra concerns?

POST 6Original post

The evolution continues with Porsche.People here have trouble free Porsches, and others with the same model year have had 2 or more RMS issues, or other problems. I don't think you can conclude that a particular year is one to avoid over another.I would never have purchased my 99' if I had thought every 99' had exactly the same production glitches.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the input guys. This was an opinion I heard on a radio show by a local pre-owned dealer a while ago. He did have some specifics, but to be honest, I can't remember what they were. I figured if it was anything of note, you guys would know about it. Seems like it's much to do about nothing, with the usual rules applying, get the best one you can find and get a PPI done, then have fun... Thanks again.

POST 8Original post

I believe all those model years are essentially the same. For some reason Consumer Reports singled out the '03 for issues ... makes no sense to me

POST 9Original post

I've heard the variocam plus surge @~3200 rpms is less apparent in the MY04s.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
