Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After locking my left headlight assembly back in, my 5 mm socket got stuck on the locking bail stud and when I tried to remove it, it dropped into the abyss somewhere under the headlight. Any ideas as to where it might have ended up-and how to get it out?

Here are the steps, 1. Get another 5mm socket. 2. Put on your extension and turn out the light. 3. Remove the light. 4. Look for the other socket. 5. You may have to remove the lower light tray. Good luck. 2003 Carrera 4S Speed Yellow / 1955 356 Continental 1500 Rust Red

Could be at the bottom of the fender, where the inner fender and metal fender meet. Tap there with the heal of your hand & listen for the socket rattling. Maybe a good time to remove the front bumper to clean out the rads. Porsche 996 986 bumper removal - YouTube

Magnet on a string. Drop it down where the socket went, with some luck it will end up where the socket is. Last resort, don't worry about the lost socket and move on.

Flex head magnet. If no luck buy a new socket and move on with life. It's not like you dropped it down the intake.

Done that myself. A magnet and a butt load of patience is the process. Do not however start popping beers till after. I found that drinking during the process constantly sets you back.

Socket retrieved! After going to my local Harbor Freight and buying 3 different magnetic tools, in addition to the many I already have, turned out the socket was sitting on the lip of the brake air duct. Maybe the fooling around with the magnets caused it to drop down there, but I have a feeling it was there the whole time. I've been a 928 owner for a long time-the 996 was added to the collection only a month ago, so I'm still learning which nook is connected to what cranny.

Good job! I thought you were going to have to write the car off as a total loss.
