Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys, I need your help. I have written a VIN decoder which I will publish very soon but there are some discrepencies in the information I have for body type. Basically I need to know what type of car you drive and the value of the 4th digit from the right of your 17 digit VIN. When you mention your car type please specify Turbo/Targa/Cab etc etc. Many thanks in advance for your help with this Cheers Berny

5 MY01 C4 Cab Here's one: http://www.vehicleidentificationnumb...r_content.html

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. As I thought, this digit is all over the place. I was given info that this digit detailed body/engine type. But it doesn't it's just part of the serial number. Thanks again.

POST 14Original post

My '04 C2 coupe is 0. My understanding is the last 4 digits of the VIN are the serial number. My '02 C2 coupe was also 0. Both these cars were produced early in the model year.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Poursha, yeah its just part of the serial number. Enough guys. Many thanks though. Cheers, Berny

POST 17Original post

My understanding is the same. My 2002 C2 Coupe was also produced very early in the model year and the digit is a "0". My understanding is that the chasis type is represented by the 4th character from the *left*. "A" means coupe, "B" means targa, and "C means cab. b-man

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

b-man you are correct. I will shortly post a link to my Porsche VIN decoder. Cheers, Berny

POST 19Original post

What if the sixth digit is 6 and the fifth digit is 2 ? What signifigance to the 6th and 5th digit from the right, then ?

POST 20Original post

As I understand it (and this may not be completely accurate): With our cars, the sixth digit from the right will always be a "6" because our cars are 996's (99*6*). The last five digits are the serial number, not the last four as someone above wrote. Therefore, the fifth digit is the start of the serial number. I guess they start at 00001 and can go to 99999. Feel free to correct me if this is not accurate. b-man

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

b-man is correct. 6th digit from the right is the 3rd character in the designator type. In the 996 or a 986 it will always be a 6. The last 5 digits are the sequence number (or serial number to you an I). Hold fire everyone, you will have a VIN decoder very soon BTW: I don't need anymore 4th digits. Thanks all.
