Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is it normal to always smell the clutch after driving the car? Even just a quick trip without any hard driving, when I pull into the driveway and exit the car, I can smell a bit of clutch. Is that normal? Also if I'm stopped at a light and have the car in neutral, then engauge the clutch and put it in first gear, I hear a very, very, very light "clunk" sound. It goes into gear very easily, but you hear the light clunk. Is that normal? The car is a 2002 C2 with 24K miles that I recently got. Thanks! Vince

POST 2Original post

Excellent question. I also smell clutch often, when I would not expect it, after very tame driving.

POST 3Original post

I think there is something going on but not sure, as I do not smell any clutch or hear any clunking, even light, while going from neutral to 1st or reverse. But I like to hear what others have to say that know what is going on.

POST 4Original post

Are you sure you are smelling the clutch? I have found that the newer 911s do have a distinct smell after being driven, even if they were driven easy. My 2000 C2 does not have a burning clutch smell after driving, although the car does have a distinct smell to it after it has been driven for some time. The smell gets stronger the harder I drive the car but I believe this is normal. As long as the clutch is not noticeably slipping, on its own or by you, I would not worry about the smell. P.S. When you drive the car under normal circumstances you should be pulling out at about 1,000 RPM and do not get back on the power hard after a shift until after you have fully released the clutch pedal. The later will greatly increase clutch wear.

So revving it to 7,000 and slooowly easing out the clutch is a bad thing??

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, so this seems a bit normal. Like I said, it's not a horribly strong clutch smell, just very light. So what your saying is that I cant drive it like my Mustang? I'll try to be a bit easier on it and see how it goes. So what about that clunk sound?

POST 7Original post

The clunking sound is not normal IMHO. I have never experienced this with any of the 996s I have driven. If you are pushing in the clutch and quickly throwing the car into 1st gear that may be the reason for the sound. The 911 gearbox likes to be shifted a little slower and with less force than other gearboxes, more so than say a Mustang. The shift action was a bit too slow and deliberate for me at first(I was trying to shift faster than the car wanted to) but once I got used to it I found the shift action to be fine. Try fully pressing in the clutch and waiting a second or two before putting the car into 1st gear. Hope this helps.
