Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I read in another post that the 911 doesn't have a limited slip from the factory? What does it have?

POST 2Original post

The 1999 996 C2 was the last model with a LSD until the 2004 GT3, which also has LSD. Other models either have PSM or open diff. Karl

POST 4Original post

Not all the 99 models have the LSD. My 99 has an open diff. To find out, next time it is on a lift spin the rear tires with the tranny in neutral. If the opposite wheel spins the opposite direction, you have an open diff... if it spins the same direction then you have the LSD.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bummer...I'll check it out, thanks.

POST 6Original post

The limited edition new 40th anniversay 911 C2 has LSD again, but the good news is that finally they managed to make LSD is compatible with PSM, so this its the first model to have both. I couldn't care less about this 40th anniv 911, but its good news for those waiting for the 997

POST 7Original post

Carlos, This 40th edition 911 is starting to sound like quite a car. First it's got 345hp, and now I find out from you that it's got both PSM and LSD. Why don't you like it? =CarlosR=

POST 8Original post

Oh, I like it, its got 3 of my favorite options: powerkit, sport supspensions and 18" wheels. Its just that I won't be buying one cause I'm not in the market for another 996 so what I care is how the 997 is going to be, and the fact that this car finally combines LSD and PSM is good news. Thats what I meant

POST 9Original post

Oh, I get it now....it does sound like a nice car! (I'm not in the market for one either, I just 'returned' the top spot on my dealer's list for a turbo cab, which is what I really want, but just can't afford right now.) =CarlosR=

POST 10Original post

Hi, hate to spoil the fun, but off the track LSD is not really necessary and all it does is dramatically increase your tyre wear. The EBD function integrated in PSM does a good enough job at keeping wheel spin under control in most conditions. Cheers Uwe

POST 11Original post

I think that's probably right, within limits. However, since I both auto-x and track my car, (as do many p-car owners), it's a different story. =Carlos=

POST 12Original post

Of course, that's why I qualified my statement with all those "not really", "good enough" and "most conditions". However, as an automotive engineer who has sat in many cars driven by professional drivers around a whole host of circuits (including Weissach and Nuerburgring), I can assure you that what limits non-professional track-enthusiasts is not the presence or absence of an LSD. Cheers Uwe

POST 13Original post

You mean ABD Uwe Yes it does a great job, I don't want to give the impression that its a poor solution, but LSD is sportier and less intrusive (you wont see a GT3 or GT2 with ABD) and combined with PSM should have no drawbacks compared to the ABD/PSM combo. So LSD is a win-win situation IMO, and I'm glad there is a posibility of LSD/PSM in the 997 instead of either ABD/PSM or LSD alone.

POST 14Original post

What I'll be really curious to see is whether Gert can eventually offer a LSD retrofit for us open-diff folks. My worry is that it would take removing EBD and possibly retuning PSM to make it work right...

POST 15Original post

Hi Carlos, You got me there! The only drawback of an LSD/PSM option would still be the tyre wear and the somewhat stiffer feel of the car around corners. Incidentally, I'd be eager to see how it would be implemented as an LSD limits the ability to brake wheels selectively. Cheers, Uwe

POST 16Original post

Yes I guess you are right, I may be speaking to early about how wonderful the LSD/PSM combo on this 40th aniv 911 is, I don't mind the tire wear or stiffer ride personally but while we know how good LSD works by itself, nobody actually knows how it handles yet combined with PSM and how they managed to do it. But I'm sure if Porsche descided to release it, its that they must have worked all the gremslims out

POST 17Original post

"I can assure you that what limits non-professional track-enthusiasts is not the presence or absence of an LSD. " I agree 110%, Uwe! I'm so far from being able to push the car to its limits on a consistent, repeatable basis that it's not even funny. On the other hand, since I need all the help I can get, that's a reason to have LSD. (But I wouldn't argue if anybody said the money would be better spent on driver training...I'm doing that too!) Carlos P.S. I sure hope we're not confusing anybody by having two Carlos on this thread....at least I know who I am!

POST 18Original post

Speak for yourself CarlosR is my username in a GSX- R forum so I don't evne know who I am at first sight

POST 20Original post

LSD in a Porsche is that like the Cocaine included with the DeLoreans? I must be missing something here... is this the Timothy Leary anniversary edition Porsche???

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Checked out the car this weekend and I do not have a limited slip diff. Guess this means it's an open diff. Anyone have any info on this rear-end?
