So, tomorrow is going to be my first day taking my car to the track. I've done autocrosses, but never been on a track before. So, now onto my questions, it appears that its going to be raining here tomorrow, and while I'm with an instructor for the whole day, is there anything special I should do to my car tonight to get it ready for a rainy track day. My tires are in good shape. Do people use and or reccomend rain -x for the track? Anything else to use to improve vision? Basically just anything at all you might reccomend. Thanks in advance.

Rain is rain is rain... no different on the track than if you were taking a trip on the highway. I personally would stay away from rain-x, I think it messes up your wipers when it wears off. If you've got good tires and good wiper blades, you should be just fine. Bring some towels, tarps to keep your stuff dry, etc. You WILL have a huge amount of fun, even in the rain. Enjoy! Michael
I have not yet tracked in the rain, but I did enjoy a "tank slapper" on my first outing at Sebring. (That's when you start to lose the back end and have to correct steering side to side and the fuel slaps back and forth in the tank. Not impressive to your instructor.) I guess my only word of advice is a classic P-car rule. Don't lift off the throtte in a turn. Trust the car to hold the road. If you "lift" the back end gets lighter and you can spin out. (or have a tank slapper that you manage to save.) Other than that -- listen to your instructor, progress at your own pace, and have fun!
Listen to your instructor, and have fun. The rain will be good for you, as it will require very smooth control inputs. In the dry you can be a little sloppier and get away with it. Ultimately you're faster and safer with smooth control inputs and driving in the rain will really help you understand that.
I agree. Your first priority is to get the car home without bending anything. Be smooth, smooth, smooth on the throttle, the wheel, and the breaks. Your car shouldn't need any special preparations for the rain assuming your tires, wipers, etc. are in good shape. Think of yourself as a limo driver, trying to get around the track without spilling your passenger's martini. You'll be fine.
Sounds like you're going to have a great day. Let us know how it went!
I agree with everything stated above except the Rain-X. I love the stuff, use it on all my cras annd have never had any problems with it messing up my wipers, but that's just one guy's opinion. Be sure to relax between your on-track sessions and drink plenty of water - even if it's raining. The experience will be great, but can be very fatiguing. Also compare notes with other drivers, yoiu can learn a lot that way.
That's not a tank slapper. "Tank slapper" is a motorcycle term, where the front end gets light, or a wheelie is landed wrong, and the handlebars oscillate side to side, in very violent fashion. Usually it'll hit so hard, depending on the motorcycle's design, the handlebar will smack into the gas tank. You just got your rear end loose and overcorrected, which led to your situation. Larry
That very thing is often referred to as a tank slapper in a car, though I'm pretty sure the term comes from motorcycling rather than it being a reference to the fuel in the tank. It's the familiar common result of trying to save a spin while staying in the throttle. It's not very similar to a motorcycle tank slapper.
rain-x is god. your lines will be very different in the rain than in the dry. great time to learn. my first two days were in a downpour and i am a better driver for it.
pretend you have a raw egg under your right foot, that will keep you smooth, Rember the auto cross counter steer, if you start too loose it dont hold on too the wheel and wait for something good to happen, ask your instructor questions about driving a "rain line" apex from the middle of the turn until you get the Feel. Well just thought i would get back to everyone that has given advice about my first track day. All I can say was regardless of the rain it was one of the most fun things I have ever done in my life. It was a complete blast. While the rain slowed me down, it made all the little mistakes I would make that much more exagerated therefore I feel that I will be a better driver for it, and being held to going a bit slower probably isn't a bad thing. By the end of the day my line was right on according to my instructor and I have already signed up for another session. Thanks again for all the advice, and I'm sure as I continue to track more I'll have more and more questions.
