I was at the Detroit Auto show on Saturday. Porsche have a few engines on display, including a 996 Turbo engine. When inspecting it, I noticed that the case has a 964 number on it in a few places. Is this normal? I thought the 964 series was produced between 1989 and 1994. I guess it doesn't matter, but I was just interested in it. Jeff

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Yes, the 964 part number mostly pertains to the crankcase. This is, however, the case with the Turbo, GT2 and GT3 engines. Not the Boxster and 996 models.
Just to confuse things more at least some GT3s are now being delivered with a new case (still based on the old 911 case) which has a 996 part number: New GT3 engine case thread
