Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Which one and why. I may go to the track a few times a year

POST 2Original post

Yellow, because it's faster. I have Silver. The word "speed" isn't in my color name

POST 3Original post

Well, on the plus side of the tip, you get a 3rd radiator, which will help on those track days, but I'd imagine that 6spd would be better for the track. If its a daily driver, and the traffic in Altanta is bad tip might be less work day to day... The color is a subjective choice...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You are right about the Traffic! But, it will not be a daily driver, unless I can't stop driving it.

POST 6Original post

Look, I have driven a tip and it works ok when you hammer the car, though it will never have the performance characteristics (esp. chassis control) of a manual. But if you have to ask the question that probably doesn't much matter to you. If not, then why bother with shifting? Then again ... if not, why bother with a Porsche at all?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's kind of an extreme statement, isn't it! No one really needs a porsche, we all buy them for one of several reasons. I'm trying to get several valid options from current owners of both cars to compare and see if someone has something that I may be missing.

POST 8Original post

I think if you're really serious about sports cars, 6 spd is the only way to go, especially if it's not a daily driver. (I have a 6 spd cab and it is a daily driver for my wife and myself in NYC; no real problem.) Plus, according to a Porsche dealer I once spoke to, 6 spds do better on resale because more people want them rather than tips.

POST 9Original post

give_me_7 I have been lucky enough to experience both the tip and 6 speed. I think it depends on the type of driving you are going to do. Nasty traffic then the tip for sure. Live in san fran then tip. I enjoyed my tip but it just did not do it for me. the car was mint, had all the options i wanted except for the 6 speed. I always felt I had to defend the car a little ( the tip ) when a friend saw the car. you know the deal, its a porsche blah blah blah why the automatic? that's not why i changed but it did play a role in my thought process. in my garage my jetta was the only manual and some how that was just wrong ( to me). I sold the tip after 6 months for a 6 speed C4S. I am just happier with the manual. the color thing is not too big a deal for me as long as it is a reasonable color. i plan on many cars down the road so i will try many colors. i would suggest really driving both before you commit. you don't want to buy then regret because it is a real PIA. Obviously this is my just opinion . good luck in your purchase. either way you will have fun. roy

POST 10Original post

I've had both, and currently have a tip Boxster and a manual ttX50. Please don't fall victim to the usual "manual is better for the track" advice. The tip makes learning a track far easier, and in certain circumstances is faster, and can only be consistently slower than a 6 speed when the 6 speed driver is expert. This is particularly true if there is a single low speed corner, since the heel-toe downshift into 2nd or 1st takes some skill. The tip works best at the track when left in full auto (forget the buttons) and when the driver is very authoritative with the throttle (slam the throttle down FAST and HARD). Using that technique, my 17 year old daughter was much faster in the Boxster than lots of manual C2 (male drivers) at her first DE. Buy the one you want. It's really not a purely rational decision.
