I recently purchased a 996 and have noticed that after driving, the car always smells like burnt clutch. I don't drive crazy or anything, and the clutch doesn't feel like it's slipping at all. It just gets stinky.... Is this common for this car?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. if the car is new, it is probably all the cosmoline (a shipping protectant to protect all the sea salt from oxidizing the metal parts) melting off
Whenever I botch a launch I get that stink, rather too often for my wallet. The odd thing is I don't usually misstep a launch on rental car clutches but they don't deliver the same twist.
I've noticed that too on my own car. I wonder if it really is a "burnt clutch smell" or some of the heating pads giving off the odour that is similar? I get it even after just regular (sub 4000 rpm shifting) driving in the city. The car also feels like it is giving off a lot of heat (and I don't think it is cosmoline, because my car is a '99 with 160,000 km's).
Have you had your clutch replaced?
same thing the other day after a fast start from stand-still. now i hear a funny noise from drivetrain when i start off slowly. also, had rear main seal replace over a month ago and now it burns more oil than it did before the seal replacement...are these things related?
I don't know if it's the same thing you are talking about, but my car has a faint sweetish smell after use. I've burn't clutches in the past, and it is NOT the same smell.
Your sweetish smell is most likely anti-freeze.
Palting, i had the anti-freeze "sweet" smell and related leak in the past. this smell is way different. taking it to dealer monday. will let you all know what i find out...
Hmmmm. Havent lost any anti-freeze that I know of in the last 28k miles. Of course, I do have them change oil every 7.5k miles, and they could be topping it off without charging me.
Clutches can start to smell when they are about to give up. Try cruising in 4th gear at 3000 rpm and floor it without downshifting, if the clutch is about to give up it will start slipping at this point. Ciao, Johannes E.
LOL, Yep, I know that smell. did you purchase the 996 new or used? Could the PO have been Ferris Buellering that thing before he sold it?

I wonder how many botched launches you get on a clutch? I figure the smell is the car giving me a raspberry for being a moron.
don't know why i'd have the problem. i don't botch launches, cause i don't labor the clutch...that's just not knowing balanced driving. my honda accord has 375,000 miles on the orignal clutch and i have not driven that car easily, so i don't think my driving technique has anything to do with it...nor does it have anything to do with my induction into the RMS replacement club.
