hi all, i'm having a BLAST driving my new toy, so i'm sorry to ask such a basic question: after a normal drive and i get out of my car, i notice the rear of the car to be particularly hot - specifically, the area just above/behind my rear wheels. while i realize that this is a rear-engine car, i'm asking because i don't recall my 1989 carrera cab to be this hot after a drive. p.s. my 996 has upgraded exhaust, plenum, and lowered 1/2 inch(i think)...not sure if those are factors. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Nothing unusual there Patrick. You could fry eggs on my engine after a spirited drive. Keep a check on the temps as you are driving and you should be OK.
The cans are located there along with all of the exhaust piping. A lot of heat in a small concentrated area....it is normal to be very hot after a drive.
You aren't driving hard enough! You didn't mention the burned rubber smell from the tire dust cooking on the mufflers (cans).
If your temperature gauge is working properly, and it's not spiking, you're fine.
I call mine the mini-nuclear reactor It warms up the entire garage and even hours after a drive it's still hot enough to keep my hands away from.
My normal driving temp is right at 180, and everything else appears normal. Thx for quick feedback everyone. p.s. how do i get the fancy auto-signature like you guys? PL 03C4S
Buzz, where are you in the Bay Area? We need to do a group drive soon, and a new owner is a good enough excuse for me!

Ya pay the $18 member fee. 180 or so is fine. As everyone else has said, all sounds normal.
I'm in Orinda, but often in the Walnut Creek/Concord/Pleasant Hill area. Let's find a fun place for early am drive along with a nice bkfst place after? Who's in? P.S. Funny i didn't know about the $18 member fee(will join shortly), especially since I was an angel investor in carsdirect.com(which merged into Internet Brands on the IPO), and then got bought by private equity. Great question, I had the same one as I get the heated garage affect as well! Thanks guys!

Take HWY1 from SF Zoo towards Santa Cruz. Stop by for a beer and calamari at the Distillery and enjoy the view . Here is the shot when I was there last in 2011.

We can start a new thread if you want to attract more folks. What day of the week works for you. I did the Livermore>Mt Hamilton drive a couple of weeks ago, on a weekday, and it was empty!

Ahhh, so that's what that smell is. I always wondered where the rubber smell would be coming from. Duh!

So, did the Jag make it home without breaking down?
